Smart Contract หรือสัญญาอัจฉริยะ คือโปรแกรมคอมพิวเตอร์ที่ทำงานอยู่บนบล็อกเชนของ Ethereum โดยต่างจากระบบสัญญาแบบเก่าจากการที่มันสามารถทำงานได้โดยอัติโนมัติตามเงื่อนไขที่ผู้เขียนกำหนดไว้ จึงเหมาะกับการใช้แลกเปลี่ยนเอกสารกรรมสิทธิ์ เช่น ที่ดินหรือหุ้น โดยตัดหน่วยงานที่เป็นตัวกลางออกไป เพราะระบบจะทำงานในรูปแบบดิจิทัลทั้งหมด อีกทั้งยังเพิ่มความน่าเชื่อถือเพราะมันทำงานอยู่บนบล็อกเชน ที่ไม่มีใครสามารถเข้าไปแก้ไขหรือปลอมแปลงข้อมูลได้ง่าย ๆ และยังมีความทนทานไม่ต้องกังวลว่าหนังสือสัญญาจะหาย ถูกขโมย หรือไฟไหม้ เพราะรูปแบบการเก็บข้อมูลแบบกระจายศูนย์นั้นจะส่งสำเนาของเราไปเก็บไว้ในที่ต่าง ๆ ทั่วโลกนั่นเอง2. ใช้สร้างโทเคนของตัวเอง
